DIY Bedazzled Sandals

I love the sneaky embellished look, where you only notice when the light catches the sparkle just right. When they are hidden on hat brims, or belt buckles or sandals, and when they add the tiniest pop to brighten a look. I have been on the hunt for more embellished and bedazzled items (what girl doesn’t love a little sparkle), and after searching high and low I decided to make my own. And thus the DIY was born.

Sandals are such a good blank slate to start with. You can do anything to them, bedazzle, glitterfy, stamp, etc. I found my blank canvas pair at Old Navy (similar), they were crying for some jewels, so naturally I obliged.

The rhinestone selection at the craft stores I visited wasn’t up to par, and if this has been stopping you before (like it has me) don’t let it. There is an abundance of rhinestones in every shape and size and color online, you can find anything you need! Rhinestones delivered, I picked up some jewel to fabric glue (you would never believe how many types of glues there are, way more options than types of rhinestones) and got to work.

I ordered two shapes of stones but decided I liked this brick-like pattern with all the same size and shape. I started in the middle and worked my way outwards to fill the entire strap with rhinestones.

The great thing about embellishing shoes is that if you have a little bit of glue sticking out, or one rhinestone is slightly out of place, it’s ok because they are far away from critical eyes. And the sparkle blinds people who are looking too closely.

The finished product was exactly what I was envisioning, subtle sparkle on a blank canvas sandal to add a touch of sparkle.

SF Half Marathon

Remember back in January when I said I was going to do this as my New Year’s Resolution? Thinking back, I’m not sure if I actually had any intentions of fulfilling that resolution at the time but yesterday I did. I ran 13.1 miles for the first time ever and let me tell you, it wasn’t the easiest thing I’ve ever done but it was one of the best!

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 10.00.37 AM

Here is a quick recap…

Miles 1-5: All in Golden Gate Park (where it was cloudy), there were a couple hills but we were cruising along just fine.

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 10.01.38 AM

Miles 5-10: Left the nice clouds in the park and ran down Haight street (pretty perfect). Some of our friends gathered to cheer us on. And after seeing them we were jazzed, the sun wasn’t too hot yet and we were excited to go downhill for a bit.

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 10.00.49 AM

Miles 10-13.1: Were R-O-U-G-H to say the least. Our legs were tired, it was hot (something we weren’t prepared for knowing the race was in SF and it’s NEVER hot here), and the water stations for the second leg felt really far apart. But we didn’t stop or walk and we talked each other through it. The finish line, bright blue with balloons and music, promising beer and water, was a welcome sight.

Screen Shot 2014-07-28 at 10.01.27 AM

Saying that I feel accomplished is an understatement. I have always been more inclined to water sports. I would rather swim a mile then run one, so this was a true test of my will power and I still can’t really believe I did it. It was hard, to say the least, but I’m so glad I did it. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my running partner, and my one piece of advice for you if you are thinking of running a half or a full – is to get someone to run with you. It makes all the difference. With one half marathon under my belt, I’m ready for the next one – Disney Half 2015 here we come!

Friday’s Favs

This week was dominated by social media for me, and my being intimidated by it. When I started LHC (new acronym, like it?), I shied away from having separate social media outlets for myself and my blog. Honestly, I didn’t want to have to keep up with all of them – it felt like a lot of work. But alas, social media is the future and after adding Twitter and creating a new Pinterest for my blog (and finding that it wasn’t really like work), I realized I would need more. Last week I started an Instagram (@lovehaightcupcakes) and I also published my Facebook page, both of which you can find on the side bar, and both of which scared the crap out of me. I was afraid of the usual things – people not liking my blog, them thinking its bad or dumb and encouraging other people to think that. But the purpose of this blog was to share my life and the things I love with anyone and everyone out there, so I had to take the chance. And it paid off, the responses have been nothing short of amazing (thank  you to everyone), so I must be doing something right, right? I hope so, and here is my last plug – follow me on all my social media things (see those pretty green buttons over there, click those) and have an amazing weekend!

Weekend Bag

After spending the past four weekends away and packing for them, I realized I need a good weekend bag. I have a couple random options, one that is slouchy but just not big enough, one of Nate’s old suitcases that has so many zippers and compartments I literally lost a bottle of lotion in it, a giant duffle bag from my swim team days and then just the regular rolling kind. None of these are right for the easy getaway packing (and overpacking) that I’ve been doing this summer so I am on the hunt for a new one.

Screen Shot 2014-07-21 at 12.46.18 PM{ 1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 }

There are so many options. I like the canvas for durability and leather for style and ease, but the striped and patterned ones draw my eye as well. These are all great options, which ones do you like best? Do you have the perfect weekend bag?

Friday’s Favs

Man, working full weeks during the summer is rough – especially after coming off of three 4-day weeks in a row. My old job had summer Fridays and even though that job was the devil, those Fridays were heaven. For some reason that extra day really takes it out of me – when are those 10 hour, 4-day work weeks coming to America? It’s been a long week, but the weekend trips have subsided (for a time) and I am looking forward to hanging out in this June-gloom city this weekend and enjoying a home cooked meal. What are your weekend plans?

L.A. Bites

L.A. like SF is a place where foodies flock. You will rarely be disappointed with your food choice in these two places, and we were not either. I only had one requirement, like I told you guys, I wanted all the dining to be al fresco, and L.A. always accommodates.

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 12.49.20 PM

After settling into our cute little hotel, we strolled down Main street and stumbled upon Brick + Mortar.

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 12.52.21 PMScreen Shot 2014-07-15 at 12.50.01 PMScreen Shot 2014-07-15 at 12.55.01 PM

Because it was Friday, and we were on vacation and because we were already really happy, we ordered solely from the happy hour menu (to keep our good moods going). We got cheese, fries and bread with more cheese on it.

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 12.48.47 PM

I really really love cheese, it’s almost an obsession. So when we ordered the cheese plate, nothing could disappoint me (because I love it all) but this plate was really impressive. The jam, honey and orange relish were paired perfectly with the four cheeses and warm bread.

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 12.53.57 PM

I am a sucker for cheese along with anything and everything truffle oil related, so you know we got these bad boys – truffle parmesan fries.

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 12.47.47 PM

Annnddd we got this pizza that had mushrooms, mozzarella and truffle oil again, woops. The pizza was crisp but had a great doughy crust and the truffle fries were hot and not too greasy or salty. I would love to try a real meal at Brick + Mortar, just based off of their happy hour bites I would venture to say their dinner is amazing.

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 12.51.23 PM

After a couple rounds and a walk to the pier, we had big plans of going somewhere fancy for tacos and margaritas for dinner, but then we saw the Calbi food truck and changed our minds. Sorry no pictures of this, but just know it was delicious food truck food at it’s finest!

We had time for one more meal on Saturday, before the wedding, so we made the best of it. Venturing into the Venice Beach area we found Joe’s Restaurant – sounds unassuming but it was actually quite chic and hip.

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 12.59.49 PM

Bloodies and Long Island Ice Teas were the perfect start to the day!

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 1.00.26 PM

Three of us ordered the stone crab hash, which I instantly decided upon just by reading the name of it. The fresh crab melted in your mouth with the egg yolk and soft peppers and potatoes. I was salivating before the plate was out down and probably finished in record time.

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 1.01.09 PM

The fourth got the huevos rancheros, which she described as delectable and which looked too perfect to eat.

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 1.39.00 PM

Sorry I failed to take any pictures of the wedding food (except for the wedding favor of donuts and champagne seen above) but Nate and I shared the prime rib and veggie options – both were delicious. I feel like this was just a tiny taste (see what I did there) of what L.A. has to offer in terms of food. I need to go back and just focus on that for a weekend (that’s my inner fat kid talking). What are you favorite spots to eat in L.A.?

The Weekender – L.A. Edition

I always forget how much I like L.A. I have this weird image in my head of this giant city with lots of smog and having to drive everywhere (which is true) but I also forget that it’s a charming town with cute neighborhoods and great food. It steals my heart each time I come back and this time was no different.

Screen Shot 2014-07-14 at 1.51.15 PM

Our hotel was in Santa Monica and on Friday, after our inaugural beer, we took a stroll down the boardwalk in search of more booze and bites (don’t worry, all the food and al fresco dining will be featured tomorrow).

Screen Shot 2014-07-14 at 2.50.16 PM

Screen Shot 2014-07-14 at 1.51.56 PM

While strolling, I took a lot of pictures of just the vegetation because it seems to be so much more vibrant in L.A. Flowers everywhere, succulents on each table, vines and grasses in front of all of the houses and palm trees to boot. Those clear skies and sunshine everyday will do that to a city.

Saturday before the wedding we walked to Venice beach for brunch and strolled through the shops and canals on the way back. I must say, the houses on the canals are probably the cutest I have ever seen!  They all have so much character and panache! All unique but fit together perfectly, with the water as a beautiful backdrop.

Gold sugared champagne glasses, a wedding cake that belongs in a magazine and pink and cream sparkles accentuated the room and wedding party perfectly. It was gorgeous, and heartfelt and fit the adorable couple perfectly.

Friday’s Favs

Summer is in full swing! Things I can check off: one wedding down, one to go, Fourth of July properly celebrated, base tan coming in well – things to work on: pool time/time in a body water, dining al fresco, staying in SF on the weekends, wearing more summer dresses. I love how everything comes to life in the summer, people celebrate more, stay out later and I am constantly hearing “why not, it’s summer’ being thrown around. That is going to be my motto for our wedding weekend in Santa Monica – cheers to warm weather and al fresco dining!  What are your summer weekend plans?

Love n’ Haight

Cake pops have stretched peoples creativity to the max, the fact that you can make a bubble gum dispenser cake pop blows my mind. The fact that we put quarters into a machine and get candy out, also blows my mind. These gum dispensing machines were invented in the early 1900’s by, you guessed it, those sugar loving Americans. And I devoured them any chance I could get. I was always partial to the white gum balls, I don’t know why, I guess I thought they tasted the best.

Screen Shot 2014-07-10 at 11.10.49 AM

But one of the best things about gum ball machines (and all candy dispensers for that matter) is that they are like a box of chocolates, you never know what (color or flavor) you’re gonna get! Which reminds me of a certain crazy street, where you really never know what you are going to see when you step out the door… A beautiful old school gumball machine or a guy with no pants on walking down Haight street. Luck of the draw I guess.

Friday’s Favs – ‘Merica Edition

Happy Fourth of July Friends! ‘We are going to live on! We are going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!’ Name that movie (hint: the name of the movie is in the quote). I’m sure Will Smith would appreciate some Friday’s Favs on this glorious day, and as an end to a very American week. I hope you all are enjoying the stars and stripes, embracing your inner American and that you have a lovely holiday weekend!
