Friday’s Favs

Even though I have no big trips or vacation plans for the summer (just weekend trips) I keep waiting for it to get here. I’m stuck in the mentality that the year starts in September and we will have to go back to school soon so summer only has a short time to arrive and spread her wings before school starts again! But alas, working year round makes that not the case, and living in SF makes it doubly not the case because it’s cloudy and June gloomy outside and summer is a long lost memory. I think I miss the feeling of summer, but we have our first wedding of the season this weekend, and hopefully that will kick it off, and if not that, then the 4th and if not that, then our second wedding (and so on and so forth). I’ve been told patience is a virtue, it’s just not one that I’m familiar with. Are you ready for summer, what are you looking forward to?

Wedding Wedges

Tis the season for weddings in the grass and in campgrounds and backyards. We all know what that means too – no heels. I know, I know, I hear you protesting all the way from here, but who wants those gorgeous heels to get muddy and stuck with grass? Not this girl, so enter my friend the wedge.

Screen Shot 2014-06-26 at 2.34.59 PM

I love Michael Kors footwear and these wedges are perfect for a summer wedding or soiree. These are simple and chic and would add a nice touch of ‘cute’ to any summer dress.

Screen Shot 2014-06-26 at 2.32.53 PM

These wedges from Zara will add some pizazz (yep pizzazz, vocab word of the day) to any summer outfit. I can see these with a navy printed dress or that white flowy boho number you have in your closet.

Screen Shot 2014-06-26 at 2.35.53 PM

Cole Haan is classic, as are his shoes. These are a bit dressier for those dusk lawn weddings, overlooking the mountains.

The more designers and brands I learn about the more I love them all. I absolutely love everything Emerson Fry, I mean everything. If I were a brand I would be Emerson Fry, but then Ivanka Trump starts designing things and I fall in love with her stuff too – it’s a vicious cycle. I mean look at how fun these are!

Screen Shot 2014-06-26 at 2.33.09 PM

Oh Kate, how we all love you. Seriously, these are perfect. They could go with any dress, fancy or not, long or short.

Seychelles makes a gorgeous shoe, and for some reason they always fit my feet perfectly (does anyone else have this problem?). I love the pop of color these would bring to a cute floral patterned dress. What are your wedding shoe go-tos? Do you reach for those wedges or stick to that favorite pair of pumps?

Love n’ Haight

Working in advertising makes you notice ads a bit more, well maybe not notice them more (who watches those pre-roll videos on youtube anyway) but maybe makes you think about them more when you do actually take notice. It’s interesting to see the different types of advertising and how effective each of them are, from the person flyering on the corner to the guy cold calling you, to that giant sign in the window, to that Anthropologie ad that just keeps popping up when you are online (it knows I want to buy that skirt, it just knows).

Screen Shot 2014-06-25 at 3.02.47 PM

The simplest and I would say most effective tool in the advertising tool bag is something eye catching and colorful. And while this soft pink sweater with the uniquely wrapped zebra on it caught my eye without the advertising (or any Anthropologie stalking), this sign for a t-shirt store on Haight Street definitely made me stop and pay attention. After inspecting this great advertisment, I walked into the store and noticed I could buy many soft, pink or orange or black t-shirts with animals creatively wrapped or pictured on their fronts and it made me wonder what type of advertising I am most susceptible to. Is it the bright, shiney and right in my face or the subtle ad that follows me around the web, showing me things I know I want to buy….

Friday’s Favs

Feeling pretty accomplished on this lovely Friday morning. Remember way back when, when I made a resolution to run a half marathon? Well I think this one is actually going to happen! Ran 7 miles this morning with my friend and it was the first time I didn’t want to kill myself during a run, I think that’s improvement!! We have a little over a month until the race, so hopefully 13.1 miles won’t be a killer. What are you accomplishments for the day, or this weekend? My goals for the weekend involve a lot of soccer (see what I did there – USA plays on Sunday) – and thats about it.

Have a stellar weekend friends!

Sticky Toffee Pudding

In honor of the World Cup (hope you all have been watching) and my love of themed anything, I made an English themed snack for the game last weekend. It turned out to be a not so bonnie football match for the Brits, but the dog’s bollocks snacks made up for it (that means delicious, apparently. I’ll stop using British phrases now), who knew sticky toffee pudding was so grand.

It was a breeze to make – the only difficult part was getting the ingredients (which you would think is the easy part). It calls for a cup of coffee and dates. Now, I don’t drink coffee (I know ridiculous) and buying a cup just for this recipe seemed weird to me. So (genius that I am, yes full pat on the back) I used a free cup of coffee from Trader Joes! It worked perfectly, and I also couldn’t find dates so I used prunes. But don’t be alarmed, it was still delicious (can I say double genius now, or is that too much?).

I used this Martha recipe (the only substitution was the prunes) and made them into mini cakes, because everything tastes better when it’s mini.

Add all the ingredients to the mixer and go to town, be sure to not over mix, or the cake will be tough. You want light little fluffy morsels so they can soak up the sticky toffee part.

While the little buns were baking, I made the toffee sauce. No pictures, sorry I think I got side tracked, but it did take a little bit longer than the recipe says.

The finished product was a cute spongy cake (poked some holes so the toffee could get inside) and a really delicious sauce on top. Like so delicious, I was scraping the plate clean by the end…

Have you had any World Cup themed parties yet, any country themed snacks?

Good Ol’ Romp

Let’s talk about rompers, they are back, with avengence. I have long been on the hunt for one (who doesn’t want a comfy one piece shorts-tank combo) and I finally found not one but two that I like.

Screen Shot 2014-06-13 at 4.05.10 PM

I found a casual patterned romper for the everyday (the beach, vacation – I’m a sucker for racerback anything) at Target, of all places.

Screen Shot 2014-06-13 at 4.06.50 PM

And a fancier one that can be dressed up with heels for a night out or paired with cute sandals for a day of shopping (although it would be torturous getting that thing on and off each time you went into the dressing room).

Screen Shot 2014-06-16 at 10.22.08 AM

I also love this chic floral one, perfect for those summer weddings.

Screen Shot 2014-06-16 at 10.23.04 AM

Or this strapless version, you can easily pull over a bathing suit on vacation.

Screen Shot 2014-06-16 at 10.24.57 AM

Rompers are also suitable for work (how versatile these little beauts are). I love this pantsuit version (I guess they call these jumpsuits, but romper is so much more fun to say).

Screen Shot 2014-06-16 at 10.23.39 AM

The options are endless! There are many a good ol’ romp out there, but finding the right one can be tough. My advice is to watch out for the waistline – too high could make the rear look too long and frumpy, too short in the torso could make the shorts too short, no waistline and it could make for a whole lot of no definition (one big shirt with shorts in the bottom). It all depends, thats why you have to try them out! See what is best/comfiest/most flattering on you and take it! And have a good ol’ romp, you deserve it!

Friday’s Favs

As summer approaches (it’s even starting to look and feel like summer in SF) I’ve increasingly felt the need for some spring cleaning. Cleaning and planning. Summer is always a busy time for us (weddings, fourth of july festivities, weekends trips) so it’s nice to sit down and plan those trips and plan for the times when you won’t have time to plan. Expect more posts out of me this summer, I am working on getting organized on here as well (I think I can, I think I can). So here is to being organized, planning (my fav) and getting ready for summer – because it’s here!!! Have great weekends friends!

The Tony’s inspire a nostalgic mood in me. It stirs up memories from my musician days and renews my love for musicals (not that it needs renewing, my favorite Spotify stations are ‘Wicked’ and ‘Disney’). I played the alto sax from 4th grade all the way to graduation day in high school and strong harmonies and melodies are embedded within my being. I am a ballad girl at heart, I think seeing Cats when I was seven years old solidified that fact (dancing cats, that sing! 7-year-old mind blown) and I’ve been addicted ever since.

Screen Shot 2014-06-09 at 4.53.23 PM

I’ve seen most of the tony-winning musicals from the past 10 years and I never miss a chance to see more (or to re-see ones I’ve already seen). Watching the Tony’s lets me be a nerd for a couple hours, allowing me to get my musical fix. I thought Hugh Jackman did a great job (even though NPH was born to host every year), and as usual the opening number blew my socks off!

Cats is still up there as one of my favs, along with any piece of music Andrew Lloyd Webber has ever touched. And the Tony’s let me see the best acts from the best musicals and plays out there right now – its like one giant trailer for the best Broadway has to offer. Did you guys watch, does anyone else out there have a weird musical addiction?

Friday’s Favs

Happy National Donut Day! I could really use a sugary, frosting covered pick me up right now. I used to love the donut holes (munchkins) in my elementary school days. They were the perfect morning snack to bring for the class (and the best surprise breakfast ever). In keeping with excited child mentality, I bought them for a group training while in Chicago – everyone was so happy about the tiny treats, it was like 3rd grade all over again! My friends were also very happy about these powdered donut treats that looked like diamond rings.

Love n’ Haight

Haphazard is a great word. I love that it can describe any one thing, but also that one thing’s state of being. Something that is fundamentally organized can still be in a haphazard state at one point or another. A city can be haphazard, on the day of a marathon for example, random roadblocks are set up, there are people running in the streets – but at the center of it all is perfect planning and execution built upon the strong foundation and layout of the city.

Screen Shot 2014-06-04 at 10.19.52 AM

I love that art can be haphazard-esque, while most of the time the artist was very precise in his movements or brush strokes. This pretty pillow has that same effect. Seemingly random brushstrokes at first glance, but upon further inspection a beautifully crafted rainbow pattern. The same goes for this apartment building on Haight. Fundamentally a very organized building with windows and stairs, but given the look of haphazardness, matching the overall feeling of Haight Street in general.
