Bar Crudo

Seafood is where it’s at. Big chunks of raw tuna with glaze and green onions, or a bowl of steaming mussels in a cream sauce or tuna confit with fresh veggies – I will take it all. And I did, at Bar Crudo.

Nate and I had a little date night here last week. Bar Crudo is a cool restaurant on Divis that specializes in raw fish, but not of the sushi variety.

With that in mind, we dove right in with a crudo plate. We ordered a duet of ahi tuna and butterfish. I am a sucker for anything ahi, I would actually eat it everyday if I could. This ahi came with a simple asian inspired glaze and was so soft I could cut it with my fork. Butterfish, which I had never tried before, was so pleasantly surprising I want to eat it all the time. It was exactly as it sounds, buttery and melt in your mouth rich (sorry no pic).

The uni (sea urchin) avocado toast was next and while it was fresh and interesting, it wasn’t my favorite. I think the taste of the sea was a little too powerful for my palate.

Our next plate was the San Sebastian which was a perfect blend of tuna confit with a soft boiled egg and roasted red peppers. Confession – at first we forgot what we ordered and couldn’t remember what this dish was. Never the less it was delicious, flaky tuna with all of the accoutrements made every bite different yet flavorful.

Our main dish, was mussels. It was one of those dishes that even now thinking about it makes my mouth water. The cream sauce went so perfectly with the mussels you wanted to drink it. I’m a huge fan of oysters but mussels, in my opinion, are their smaller, tastier cousins. Bar Crudo was excellent, it was a great choice for raw delicious fish without it being wrapped in a sushi roll. For a date night or a casual happy hour, this is the place to go.

Friday’s Favs

Rough week. Not sure why, not sure if it was because it was a short week and everything got crammed into 4 days or if it was the fact that I had something to do every night after work or what. But I can say that I am glad it’s over! The good news is that it’s Friday, and its going to be sunny and 65 degrees this weekend! Going outside is going to squash those bad-week blues and I’m planning on outdoor brunches and park lunches (sweet rhyme). There were a couple bright spots in my week – like the shark sweatshirt I got.

What are your plans for the weekend?

D’Orsay Flats

These flats are all the rage. I have three pairs (no make that four of just the flats), but the D’orsay style has been around for years. It was previously seen in heels, with the inner lining (and sometimes outer lining) of the shoe is cut out to reveal the arch of the foot (it’s like a foot bikini). Now it’s moved into flats and it makes for such a comfy, alternative look that can be sassy or elegant!

I own these Freda Salvador flats (remember I won them) in the D’Orsay style and they go perfectly with rolled up boyfriend jeans or sleek leather leggings.

I love these from Modcloth, they are sassy and fresh and would look great with a navy and white striped dress.

These spotted ones from Madewell are on my wish list! I’m drooling just thinking about them!

For a little bit cheaper option, you could go for these with the double strap. They are are sweet with the buckles and would look great in the summertime with shorts.

You could also get funky with this patterned D’Orsay from Nordstrom. I love bright patterns on shoes, it provides a subtle pop while adding so much character to an outfit.

Which ones are your favorite? I own three of the five on this list – can you say obsessed?

Friday’s Favs – Valentine’s Edition

Happy Valentine’s Day friends! This is one of my favorite holidays, I know I know I can hear you groaning from here. But I think it’s less about the mushy gushy couples stuff and more about telling everyone in your life how much you care about them. It’s that one day where you can go out and tell someone you love them when maybe you wouldn’t have before, or you tell that person you see everyday how much you appreciate them. Case and point, I love everyone who reads this blog and maybe I don’t tell you enough, but I do!

Love my friends – it’s all around and this day is celebrating that! So I hope you have a day filled with love and affection – and that you take advantage of it for this long weekend!!

Luke’s Local

We have been so busy these past couple of weeks I decided to order us a pre-made dinner so it would be ready when we got home. I heard about Luke’s Local at the SF Beer Fest at Fort Mason. They were handing out tastey snacks (genius idea with how much beer everyone was consuming) and if you signed up you got a discount off your first order. So naturally, in my beer goggled state and after tasting the little appetizer I put my name and email down.

The one drawback about this company is that I literally wanted to get one of each meal. Everything so sounds delicious and the menu changes every week. They have great veggie only options, gluten free options and of course meat lovers options too (they know what I like).

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 12.30.21 PM

I ordered the Chef’s Meal of the Week – Braised Porchetta. Which sounded too good to pass up. I have never attempted porchetta at home and I don’t think I have the equipment to do so. It seemed like a perfect Tuesday night dinner.

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 12.31.51 PM

They give you delivery times and they are very prompt! I got home and a couple of minutes later my dinner arrived. You throw it in the oven and out pops an entirely prepared meal that took you no time and no dishes to prepare!

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 12.32.03 PM

The pork was delicious and its flavors were highlighted by the fresh, garlicky chimichurri sauce. Green rapini was crunchy and the horseradish mash potatoes added a kick and creamy aspect to every bite. I will be ordering again, it was too easy and delicious not to.

Farmer’s Market

It’s a little rainy here today, and a little snowy and icy in other places so I thought I’d share some pictures from the warmer days (or just last week in SF).

The Ferry Building is a SF icon, she sits at the aquatic entrance to the city, right next to the Bay Bridge (remember the lights) and is a welcome sight to all. Not only is the Ferry Building a huge commuting center for the city by the bay, it’s also home to some of the coolest little shops and restaurants, as well as a pretty famous farmers market (rated one of the top farmers markets in the nation).

The market is a popular tourist attraction but it’s also full of locals doing their weekly grocery shopping. Out front are all the veggies and fruits and daily shopping needs.

They have local honeys (good for allergies) and huge baskets of fresh flowers.

Out back is where you get the good stuff. There are food stalls and food trucks full of amazing snacks. We stopped at Craftsman and Wolves for and egg muffin – to. die. for. Amazing bacon, cheddar chive muffin holding a perfectly cooked soft boiled egg!

We also stopped at Miette for a macaroon, because it was Saturday and why not have one, or three for breakfast?

As you wander down the aisles of tents and food stalls you are greeted by all the fresh colors and friendly sounds of local growers and sellers and buyers. Everyone is smiling in the sunshine buying their bread for the week or their hummus for their dinner party. It makes for a perfect start to a sunny Saturday morning.

Love n’ Haight

Sometimes I wish I had that artist gene. It runs in the fam, my sister got it but it skipped me. She can literally draw or paint anything. She made a poster for me when I ran for president (of the 8th grade) that was my name in the same script as the Coca-Cola logo (ps. I won, and it was probably because of that poster). The coolest thing I have ever drawn or painted was a replica of Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’ – it was a total Monet. But instead of making my own art, like my sister does, or like she will hopefully do for me, I need to buy it. And you guys know I have no trouble buying things, no trouble at all.

I am attached to art with lots of colors. I love that this one, by Kristy Gammill, is neon bright but also abstract. It could go anywhere in my apartment to add a pop of color. This girl on Haight has some talent, should I commission her for a painting to hang in my house? I might steer away from the skull, but she is using all the colors of the rainbow.
